Best Data Viz
About · Built in Austin, TX

Hi - I'm Davis.

Solo founder. Data analyst by trade. I spent nine years helping companies find the story buried in their numbers, then got tired of watching good analyses die in bad charts. Best Data Viz is what I wished existed.

The tool is simple: upload your data, ask a question in plain English, and get five ranked chart options - each one annotated with the principle that chose it. You pick, you edit, you export. I tried to get out of your way.

The opinions are not mine. They come from a small library of research the data-viz community has been refining for forty years. The principles are distilled from Cleveland & McGill (1984) on encoding accuracy, Tufte (1983, 1990) on graphical integrity and data-ink, Few (2012) on zero baselines, Ware (2004) on perception, and Munzner (2014) on matching chart to task. Every recommendation on this site cites the principle that made it.

The encyclopedia is a public reference - 97 chart types, when to use each, when not to, what data it needs, and the mistakes people keep making. You do not need an account to read it, and you do not need to use the tool to find it useful.

Why I built this

I like visualizing data. I have also seen too many meetings derail because the slide in front of the room was a truncated bar chart with a rainbow palette and five pie charts stacked underneath. Chart-type choice should not be the bottleneck between a good analysis and a decision. So I built a tool that takes the question you actually care about, looks at the shape of your data, and ranks the chart types that fit - grounded in real research, not default templates.

Background

Nine years doing data analytics at tech startups and large companies like Electronic Arts - turning messy numbers into decisions, chasing cloud-cost anomalies, and shipping dashboards that people actually read. UT Austin for undergrad and grad (Economics with Special Honors, then MS Business Analytics). Full history on LinkedIn.
